His
Legacy

The Black Mozart of His Time

Willard J. Hines (b.1943-2020) was a pianist, teacher, composer, vocal coach, mentor, leader, activist and father figure to countless students. A native of Paducah, Kentucky, he was known affectionately as the Black Mozart of his time while studying at Kentucky State University.

Journey to Detroit

In 1966, Willard ventured to Detroit, Michigan, where his remarkable journey in music education began. He started at Butzel Jr. High School and then transitioned to the Martin Luther King, Jr. High School, where he would leave an indelible mark on generations of students.

Building a Musical Legacy

While teaching in Detroit Public Schools, Willard began building his network by working with local and professional recording groups such as "The Dramatics", "The Jones Girls", "The Quickest Way Out", and "The Enchantments". His talent and dedication led him to form his own group, The Willard Hines Ensemble, which performed at the famed Apollo Theatre.

The Courville Concert Choir

Returning to teaching at Courville Elementary School, Willard made such an impression on young singers that his students stayed musically connected with him even after they matriculated. This connection inspired the formation of the Courville Concert Choir, an ensemble of singers of all ages that has become a Detroit educational institution.

The Courville Concert Choir has toured the U.S. and performed on a professional level in great concert halls and stages with legends including gospel singer Oleta Adams, Donny Osmond, Melba Moore, Stephanie Mills, country singer Lorrie Morgan, and many more.

A Lasting Impact

Willard spent over 24 years at Courville Elementary School, instilling in his students that they are the leaders of tomorrow and they can make a world of difference. His legacy continues through the Willard J. Hines Voice Scholarship, established to honor his memory and support aspiring vocal artists.
